Welcome back to another revival of The Bach Guild. We started issuing digital boxed sets in 2013, and we’ve had 2 hiatuses (hiati?) since then, so now we’re back with our third incarnation. This time we’ve got quite a few releases in store – and we’re creating releases of all types for all types of digital listeners. We’re launching with our tried and true Big Bach Sets, but we’ll be quickly branching out via downloading, streaming and video streaming to bring great music to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Big Bach Set Volume 3 is the first Bach release that features the music of J.S. Bach and his sons. BBS3 also has contributions from composers and performers who use Bach’s music as a starting point. In some cases, these contributions come from composers of note, such as Schoenberg and Webern. But we’ve also included a charming take on Bach’s suites for unaccompanied cello, performed and “interpreted” by Charles Curtis. We’ve taken care not to throw off “the mix”, as the cello suite arrangements are low-key and charming. However, purists beware...it’s not just unaccompanied cello, but subtle background additions. In fact, the Bach transcriptions might be more jarring than the cello suite “improvisations”, but we’ll leave that to you.

From the Bach Guild/Vanguard Classics catalog, titles that are receiving their digital debuts on BBS3 are:

From the Vanguard LP “J.S. Bach: Transcriptions for Orchestra” (VRS 1092 or VSC 2021)

Bach-Schoenberg: Prelude & Fugue in E flat major ("St. Anne"), BWV 552 (arranged for orchestra)

Bach-Schoenberg: Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele, BWV 654 (arranged for orchestra)

Bach-Schoenberg: Komm, Gott Schöpfer, heiliger Geist, BWV 667, arranged for orchestra

Bach-Webern: Ricercare, from The Musical Offering BWV 1069 (arranged for orchestra)

From the Bach Guild LP “J.S. Bach: Anna Magdalena Songbook” (BG 510, the 10th recording the Bach Guild ever released). The harpsichordist is Kurt Rapf, the soprano on 5 vocal tracks is Maja Weis-Osborn. (Yes, it’s mono, of course. Recorded in 1950, it actually doesn’t sound too bad!)

Bach, C.P.E.: March in D Major, BWV Anh. 122 (from Notebook for Anna Madgalena Bach)

Petzold: Minuet in G Major, BWV Anh. 114 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: March in E-flat Major, BWV Anh. 127 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Couperin: Rondo in B-flat Major, BWV Anh. 183 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Willst du dein Herz mir schenken, BWV 518 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Prelude in C Major, BWV 846 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Polonaise in G Minor, BWV Anh. 119 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Minuet in D Minor, BWV Anh. 132 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Polonaise in F Major, Anh. 117b (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Gedenke doch, mein Geist, BWV 509 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort, BWV 513 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Solo per il Cembalo, BWV Anh. 129 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Bist du bei mir, BWV 508 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Hasse: Polonaise in G Major, BWV Anh. 130 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Musette in D Major, Anh. 126 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Minuet in F Major, BWV Anh. 113 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Wer ner den lieben Gott lasst walten, BWV 691 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Recitative: Ich habe genug, BWV 82 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

Bach: Aria: Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen, from Cantata Ich habe genug, BWV 82 (from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)

And one last title, again, out of print for over 50 years are two works by Bach’s sons, and both of these recordings might have been pioneers in bringing to light the works of these composers. Released on the 4th LP issued by The Bach Guild in 1952, this LP featured works by J.C. Bach and C.P.E. Bach, and might have been world premiere recordings in their day. We’ve included them mainly for historic value and for some fun – they are remarkably good sounding recordings, and J.C. Bach is underrepresented in the active catalog even now. The works are:

Bach, C.P.E.: Symphony No. 1 in D Major, WQ 183/1

Bach, J.C.: Sinfonia Concertante for 2 violins and oboe in E-flat major, WC 33

Bach, C.P.E: Sinfonia in C, WQ 182, No. 3

Released on compact disc but many decades out of print, so a newcomer to the digital era, we’ve included Josef Suk’s recording of the Brandenburg Concertos, with the Suk Chamber Orchestra. The recording was never released on LP, and the original CD release selection number was OVC 7002-3. And as far as the Bach Guild Vanguard catalog goes, that’s really it, we are now officially out of Brandenburg Concerto recordings to re-issue. There are a total of 3 recordings. The first issue, with Felix Prohaska conducting the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, was the first to use some early music techniques, and may have been the first released in stereo. The second release was with Carl Pini and the Academy of St. Andrew, and now, we’re done. While hardly an historic find, 20 years of silence was enough. No need to keep it in a prison any longer.

Another in the “gone for a while” category is the Wiener Solisten performance of The Musical Offering. Recorded in the mid 1950s and released originally on LP Bach Guild BG 658, this title has also been unjustly neglected, and makes it digital reappearance after sleeping for about 2 decades.

From the newer catalogs that we’re releasing via Bach Guild, the one “never-before-released" title leads off the entire compilation. We’ll be reissuing more of the ProArte Joshua Rifkin recordings, and this charming recording of Bach concertos arranged for oboe is a sparkling return to circulation, and a lot of fun to listen to.
