I am excited to see that you are preserving these historic performances and offering them to a public that is still very interested in these recordings. I assume that the Mozart quintets in this set are the stereo Vanguard recordings from the Bach Guild LPs. Some time ago I discovered that the Griller Quartet and William Primrose had recorded (ca. 1956) an earlier set, in monaural only, for the British Decca label. These were then sold to Vanguard for issue. Two quintets were issued on Vanguard before the decision was made to re-record all of the quintets in stereo. I have been told by Decca Eloquence that Vanguard still owns the tapes of the earlier monaural Decca Mozart quintets with the Griller Quartet and Primrose. Is there a possibility that this earlier set (that remains mostly unissued by Decca or Vanguard) could be offered in a small box? I have heard a couple of test pressings and they sound fantastic!
Thank you for your comment. Quite a great tidbit of information. I can’t promise that we can locate the original mono tapes – as mentioned in the recent New York Times article, master tapes are stored but usually in a disorganized, random fashion and I think, with Vanguard having 3 owners since 2000, it might be difficult to track down the original mono versions, if they weren’t tossed away when the stereo versions were made. The only versions I can find in our library are stereo versions, but I’ll ask our engineer to decipher what we have (we do have DAT copies of the original masters), and see if we might have the mono versions quite by accident.
