Again, the release of Big Chopin Box represents an attempt to correct and revive a Bach Guild release from the past, the Little Big Chopin Box. That title, similar to the Big Vivaldi Box (released in 2014), has disappeared from most of the digital retail downloading and streaming sites. After the "correct" attempts to revive the title through proper channels were met with no activity, we decided that the combination of all the recent catalogs that now comprise The Bach Guild would actually provide a larger and possibly better Chopin box than the title that disappeared into the digital ether. And so, the Big Chopin Box has arrived.
There is undoubtedly a duplication of repertoire from the first release. But there are additions, also. The most notable addition to the Big Chopin Box is the inclusion of Peter Serkin's 1986 Chopin recital for ProArte (released on CD as ProArte CDD 246). This mixed recital of Chopin's works is released here digitally for the first time, and this marks the revival of this recording, which has been out of print for probably 30 years.
We're showing a bit of prejudice here, but because we have such respect for Peter Serkin, instead of breaking up his recital into group of works, as we have done for the rest of this box, we're keeping the original item intact, and also, not removing works that are repeated elsewhere in the box. It's both a measure of respect and a response to a few of our followers who asked that we keep the original albums "intact" when we create these Big Boxes.
Also available for the first time on the Big Chopin Box is Arthur Moreira Lima's performances of the Chopin waltzes. Recorded in the mid 1970s, these performances are making their digital debut with this release. (Note - his recordings of the works of Nazareth are also scheduled for release in 2020 on the Little Big Spanish Music Box 2).
And with the disapperance of the first Chopin Bach Guild box, we didn't want to let the great moments from the Vanguard catalog vanish with it, so we have brought back seminal performances by Jeanne-Marie Darre, Alfred Brendel, Bruce Hungerford and Giuomar Novaes.
