On to Big Mozart Box – in reading great reviews on Amazon from passionate purchasers, I wanted to make a few observations and comments.
As for us repeating ourselves – it’s inevitable but we WILL try NOT to do that. Considering that the Mozart box started at 30 hours and eventually got cut down to 14, we could have eliminated the repeat of the previously released divertimenti and replaced it with the other David Blum Mozart divertimenti recording – but we had some concerns about some editing errors that we heard on that master, which has never been released since its issue on LP.
And regarding the discussions about sound quality – there are some vast differences between some of the masters and their transfers to digital files. The main problem with creating these HUGE boxes is maintaining the quality level. We attempt, at our end, to establish a standard, but the digital files can go through three, sometimes four transfers before they reach you. And we only control the first two. And at times we are working with older materials – and we have been trying to release long dormant recordings in all of these releases – and the materials we are working with are not entirely suitable. But – we have NEVER released any material mastered from an LP. As I posted earlier, we may, as some great recordings are marred by damaged ¼ inch 15 or 30 IPS tapes, and there are no other sources to use. But to this point in our releases, we have never done this. We have transferred from reel to reels, used DATs and ripped from CDs in creating these packages. But muddy sound may result from a 1950s era tape. Many of our tapes from that era sound extraordinary but some, frankly, do not.
Now, on to metadata CORRECTIONS! Sorry, but there were some mislabeled tracks.
Tracks 29-31: Oboe Quartet – Harold Gomberg’s fellow musicians are members of the Galimir String Quartet, not the Yale String Quartet. The musicians – since there’s not enough room to put this in the metadata on a digital file: Felix Galimir, violin, Samuel Rhodes, viola, and Fortunato Arico, cello.
Tracks 46-50: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik – some of you have already caught this error – this is not a quartet at all. It is I Solisti di Zagreb, conducted by Antonio Janigro.
Tracks 62-67: Piano Quartets – in these recordings, Peter Serkin is joined by an all-star but unnamed New York based trio of musicians, not the Yale String Quartet: ALEXANDER SCHNEIDER, violin, MICHAEL TREE, violin and DAVID SOYER, cello. Again, it’s impossible due to restrictions to list all of these great musicians, which is a shame.
