Our Big Organ Box revives several superlative and long out of circulation recordings from deep in the Vanguard/Bach Guild vaults. Mainly, this box restores several lost Anton Heiller recordings of two large collections of Bach's organ works. However, the reasons that these recordings were out of print remain a factor in this release. There are some files that are missing, and not replaceable given our current recorded assets (we don't master off LPs). However, these recordings remain sought after and with two missing files from a catalog of 80 recorded tracks, we made the decision to release these recordings, and apologize afterwards.
Mainly, what is missing are three tracks from Anton Heiller's performanes of Bach's 18 Chorales, BWV 651-688 released on Vanguard's Cardinal label as VCS 10039/40 in the early 1960s. One track has an unfixable tape glitch, and the other two tracks are mislabelled and are alternative versions (alternative takes) of other works. So the three missing chorales are BWV 665, 666 and 668. We're sorry about this - we have tried for years to find replacements, but we have made the decision to go forward with the release without these tracks.
For those fans of Heiller's organ performances, this is the release you've been waiting for. Also, we love to present to our listeners long gone and rarely heard performances - and 78% of this release (the first 78 tracks) have not been available on any digital release, and the 18 Chorales and Orgelbuchlein BWV 599-644 (original LP release of VCS 10026/27) are also heard and released for the first time in 50 years, since the LP release of these tracks in the mid 1960s. Heiller's performances of the Bach/Vivaldi Organ Concertos (tracks 61-75, original LP BG 637, CD release AMD 8018), a favorite of label founder Seymour Solomon, was released on CD in the 1990s, but those items are long out of print on CD, and were never issued digitally.
