Introductory Note on Big Vivaldi Box, Volume 2
Over the course of the 8 year history of The Bach Guild, we've been very lucky to have produced over 100 titles in our Big Bach Set line. These are truly a labor of love for all of the people who have worked on this line over that time. It's a big job, but parts of it are also equivalent to grape picking in a musical catalog. The materials that we use are, in an overall context, fairly well preserved, although it's at times because these materials have been hidden from corporate owners, or, at very least, just kept out of sight until the inexorable movement to pack away the "assets" of a music label become too much to handle and things mysteriously disappear.
The Bach Guild is not immune, the recorded elements that make up these boxed sets are far-flung to say the least, and not every boxed set can be created utilizing the perfect conditions. All of which is a long-winded introduction to a well-known fact - that we make mistakes, and along the way we've made some very good/bad mistakes in the creation of these boxes.
Mistakes are human, but in the world of digital exploitation, they are not forgotten or forgiven. A mislabelled track, or a track with the awful and often hard to detect "tape squeal" that has appeared on a few Bach Guild titles have appeared, and unfortunately, at its height, Bach Guild was expected to produce new releases on a near-weekly basis, and the releases were "required" to be at least 6 hours long and contain hundreds of tracks, so...as we said, mistakes were made.
There are quality control guards and they catch more than they miss, but at times, things slip through. And if a retailer (let's use Amazon as an example) receives more than 2 customer complaints about a track on one of these boxes, the item is removed and we are asked to replace the defective track. And usually, although almost always with some prodding, the title is returned to circulation.
This all relates to Big Vivaldi Box, Volume 2 because despite our best attempts, this title was removed from Amazon, as far as we can tell, about 5 years ago and has never been replaced, despite attempts as recent as this spring to "redeliver" the title to Amazon digitally.
Mix this in with the growing feeling from a compilation standpoint that we should be utilizing the growth in Bach Guild's asset base (when we started we could only use the Vanguard Classics catalog, we have now expanded to use the eOne/Koch Classics, Royal Philharmonic and ProArte catalogs) to "freshen up" the catalog. Some of our best titles featuring the classical "name-brands" are over 5 years old and we have gotten new repertoire that represents a vast improvement over what was used.
So we give you Big Vivaldi Box, Volume 2. This box is a mix of repertoire used on Big Vivaldi Box combined with new material from the ProArte baroque catalog, featuring La Petite Bande and the Orchestra of the 18th Century. What was removed were the Vienna State Opera Orchestra recordings of Vivaldi's La Cetra and L'Estro Armonico. The original Big Vivaldi Box is still available on Spotify, and you can listen to it by clicking here: https://open.spotify.com/album/52nZGRpZ9wuAsaDCwfadr5?si=30-gqcVOTKelFrq8XI-Y-Q, or by searching for it here on our site at http://thebachguild.net/product-page/big-vivaldi-box/
